Education & Development Grants
Funds to support education and professional development
As the official charity of NHS Borders, we support staff education and professional development to improve the knowledge and understanding of effective treatment and practice and to develop NHS Borders’ ability to deliver outstanding care and improve health outcomes.
To improve planning and streamline access to funding, the charity works in partnership with NHS Borders Training Education and Development (TED) Board and a single application form has been designed for all requests for training, education and development opportunities whether funded by NHS Borders or charitable sources.
There will now be TWO dedicated funding calls per year, allowing for better forecasting and enabling staff to plan.
Applications Open: 31st October 2025 and 16th March 2026
Applications Close: 12th December 2025 and 24th April 2026
Outcomes Announced: 18th December 2025 and 13th May 2026
*Some charitable requests up to £1,000 may be considered outwith the funding timeframes
Important Note:
Our charity relies on donations, and oftentimes these are given to specific wards, services or other areas of healthcare. At this time, we can only offer funding where we hold donations for that particular area.
Sometimes, we may need to prioritise between different requests; so we may not be able to support every eligible application.
If you’re thinking about applying, please contact us first so we can talk through what funding might be available.

The opportunity must be focused on improving knowledge and understanding of effective treatment and practice for patients and the community of NHS Borders
We look to support opportunities which focus on a patient group; therefore, should be open to any staff working with this group across NHS Borders regardless of ward/department/service.
All courses should be relevant to the attendee’s job role.
Proposals for individual qualifications (including modules) must justify why this is in the best interest of the patients and community of NHS Borders and are subject to staff personal contribution.
We work in partnership with NHS Borders Training Education and Development (TED) Board to allocate resources effectively and for maximum impact. Requests over £1,000 must be endorsed by the TED Board.
All attendees must have 100% statutory and mandatory compliance, complete a Study Leave Form, and are subject to NHS Borders’ Education Policy
The course/opportunity must be delivered within 12 months of the grant being awarded.
The charity should be acknowledged in all presentations and posters.
Attendees will be expected to engage with the charity to evaluate the impact of funding.
-
As a charity, we must deliver a public benefit.
Therefore, proposals for individual qualifications (including Masters modules) must justify why this is in the best interest of the patients and community of NHS Borders.
For courses running longer than one year, an application for the entire costs of the course across all years should be made.
If the qualification is fully relevant to the staff member’s job, the charity will pay 75% of the fees.
If the qualification is partially relevant to the staff member’s job, the charity will pay 50% of the fees.
If awarded funding, staff agree to the terms of NHS Borders’ Education Policy, including the provisions for reimbursement to the charity of course fees in the event of course non-completion or the applicant leaving the Health Board within two years of completion.
-
The charity can support attendance where it can be shown to meet its charitable purpose and key priorities.
Requests to attend meetings and conferences must be approved before bookings are made.
It would not generally be anticipated that more than two staff attend any individual meeting or conference and it is expected that those attending will feed back to both the charity and the wider organisation to share some of the learnings.
Where there are genuine reasons as to why additional numbers of staff should attend, this should be made clear in the application form.
Travel, accommodation and subsistence must follow NHS Borders’ policy and be reasonable.
-
Away days, team building or staff social events where the aim is solely or primarily to raise morale and promote well-being.
Staff salaries or backfill costs.
Training which is the responsibility of NHS Borders as a requirement of health and safety, employment law or ministerial policy direction.
Requests for training/education which is statutory/mandatory (or otherwise essential) for staff in their role.
Retrospective requests for funding (i.e. something which has already been delivered, something which NHS Borders has committed to fund, etc.)
